Dr. John Burns is a highly respected clinical psychologist, author, and researcher with over 20 years of professional experience. He holds qualifications in clinical psychology from Macquarie University and social work from the University of New South Wales. Throughout his career, John has worked in diverse roles, including at The Children’s Hospital in Sydney, a leading children’s substitute care agency, and as a school psychologist.
John earned his PhD from Macquarie University in Sydney, where he continues to serve as an Adjunct Fellow. His doctoral research—and his ongoing passion—focuses on helping schools improve their ability to identify and support students with mental health concerns.
He is an endorsed clinical psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and an AHPRA-approved supervisor.
Over the years, John has held various honorary positions, such as convening the Australian Psychological Society’s Psychologists in Schools Interest Group and serving as the Professional Development Coordinator for the Association of Independent Schools of NSW. He writes a regular column for Independence, the journal of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA), and previously served as a board member for Abbotsleigh.
John is married with three young adult children. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys surfing and is an avid supporter of the Wests Tigers NRL team.
